Baby showers are always a great way to celebrate the anticipated arrival of a new family member. Etiquette used to demand that baby showers only be given for the first pregnancy. Whether it is the first baby or the last, each new arrival should be celebrated, and if all the new arrival’s needs are already met, then pampering the new mom, can be a baby shower alternative.
Planning is the key to great, memorable baby showers. First, you should determine the type of baby shower you want to have. If it is a pampered mommy shower, your plans will be quite different from an office shower or a first baby shower for younger couples. Where first baby showers focus more on necessities, an office baby shower can be one where fellow employees chip in for a single, larger item, or each person buys two or three inexpensive necessities, and they are all thrown into a wicker bassinet. When you are hosting a baby shower, anywhere other than at the office, games and refreshments are usually enjoyed, but be sure and check, before planning a lavish affair at work, to determine what is appropriate, and should you want to have a more traditional shower for a fellow employee, consider having it at a neutral location.
Baby Shower Games
• "Baby Food Taste Test"
Buy eight jars of baby food - cereal, fruit, vegetables, or meat. Cover the jars, and write a number on the side of each jar. Write the numbers 1 through 8 around the outside of a paper plate for each person present. Pass out the paper plates, and plastic spoons, and pass around each jar of baby food. Drop a spoonful of each food next to the corresponding number. Players taste the baby food, and try to identify each flavor. This will be more difficult than you think. Remove the covers from the jar, to reveal the answers. Whoever has the most correct answers wins a prize.
• "Guess Who?
Have guests bring a baby picture of themselves to the party. Attach each picture to a sheet of paper. Pass around the papers, and have players try to match the adult to the baby.
Baby Shower Decorations
The best decorations for a baby shower are inexpensive, useful items, displayed in a decorative manner. For example, just string colorful ribbon across the room, and attach baby items (booties, diapers, onesies, bibs, etc.) with diaper pins, pacifier holders, and clothes pins. After the party, the mom-to-be can keep all the decorations for her little one!
Pin colorful foil letters to diapers, spelling out a message such as, “Special Delivery!” and pin them to baby diapers. Attach the diapers to a nylon clothes line, for a unique banner.
Let useful items serve as a centerpieces or decorations at your baby shower. Fill a baby bathtub with punch, and float a rubber ducky for added decoration.
Group empty baby food jars filled with favors (small candies, nuts, truffles, etc.) at the center of the table, in the shape of a cake, and consider wrapping shower gifts inside crib sheets or receiving blankets, rather than traditional wrapping paper. Simply place the gift in the center of the blanket, gather the edges at the top with a ribbon, bow, or even baby shoes tied into a bow around the top. Just a few creative ideas, and your baby shower will be an event to be remembered. Oh, and don’t forget the film for the camera!
